At the Fremantle Door & Window Company, we provide a lot of custom built doors and windows for the Perth area. We build them out of 100% solid timber using traditional craftsmanship. What you may not know is that we always use ethically-sourced timber. So, why are we so committed?
Because ethically sourced timber promotes a sustainable lifestyle. We want to leave the world as good or better than we found it. Here’s why.
Carbon Footprint
Your carbon footprint is an accounting of how much carbon you have added to the atmosphere in any process. Carbon is a crucial part of the greenhouse gas, CO2, which contributes to global warming. Anyone who has spent even one summer here knows that we don’t need any more global warming.
Timber, when managed correctly has a negative carbon footprint. It actually uses up more carbon than it puts into the environment. To make a long story short, trees “inhale” CO2 and “exhale” oxygen. The tree uses the carbon component of CO2 to actually create wood fibres. The oxygen is released through the leaves.
A tree uses more carbon and contributes more oxygen when it is growing fast than it does when it is old. Consequently, it is healthy for the environment to cut trees down when they reach a certain level of maturity and replant them. The trees that are cut are no longer separating carbon from CO2 as fast as they once did, but are replaced by young trees that are “hungry” for carbon atoms.
Timber that is harvested at the correct age from a forest or plantation that is immediately replanted is certified as being “ethically sourced.”
The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC)
The MTCC is the “gold standard” in the Australasian part of the world when it comes to certifying ethically-sourced timber. They are an independent organisation in Malaysia who are known for their integrity.
