Timber vs Aluminium: Which is Better?

We provide custom built doors and windows built out of 100% sustainable timber for the Perth area. We are obviously biased here, but we would like to compare timber to aluminium to provide some insight on why we choose to build with timber.

Initial Cost

Initially, aluminium costs less to install. That is why it is used in 74% of homes and 99% of commercial applications. Part of the reason is that it is more easily shaped than timber.

Timber vs Aluminium: Which is Better?

Insulation

Timber is by far a superior insulator when compared with aluminium. Aluminium has a high degree of heat conductivity. In fact, aluminium is the opposite of an insulator. When it is cold outside, aluminium makes your home cooler. When it is hot, aluminium makes your home warmer.

Timber is one of the best natural insulators in the world. It protects your home from conditions that are too hot or too cold.

Aesthetics

Aluminium doesn’t really fit in with anything. It can be painted, but it still looks like aluminium. Timber, on the other hand, is extremely versatile. It can be painted any colour, but it can also be stained, oiled or varnished with a clear coat to allow the natural colour and grain of the timber to show through. That allows timber to help integrate your home with its natural surroundings.

Timber also looks good on the interior. Think of being in an office building with two businesses next door to each other. One has an aluminium framed door. The other has a beautiful, solid timber door. Which one looks more prosperous?

Environmental Impact

Aluminium is 100% recyclable, but the manufacturing process leaves a large carbon footprint and creates a lot of environmental waste. Timber has a negative carbon footprint, taking carbon from CO2 to build itself and releasing oxygen into the environment.
