If you want custom built doors and windows, your two main choices for sashes and frames will be aluminium and timber. At Fremantle Door & Window Company, we have chosen to make all of our custom doors and windows out of sustainably sourced timber and weatherproof glass. The glass is made for us here in WA and the timber is from Australian plantations or forests that are certified by the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC).
There are a lot of reasons why we use timber instead of aluminium. Here are the reasons why timber always wins over aluminium.
Timber is a Superior Building Material that Saves You Money
For custom built doors and windows, timber is the superior building material and it isn’t even close. Timber is nice and thick. It insulates your home a lot better than aluminium. Timber frames fit together more snugly due to timber’s ability to “give” against other timber and form a seal that keeps air from going in or out.
Timber is much easier to shape, form and cut than aluminium. It is safer to work with, too. This means less labour and insurance costs are handed down to you when we price out our doors and windows. You also pay a lot less for heating and cooling because of the insulative properties and airtight seals.
Easy Repair and Maintenance
If your aluminium door or window needs to be repaired, you have to pretty much replace an entire side. Timber can be filled, refinished and replaced in small sections. Timber is so easy that it is usually a DIY repair, whereas you will have to either pay a lot of money to repair an aluminium door or window. More often than not, you simply have to replace your entire aluminium door or window.
The life of a timber door or window is so long, that for most people it is a “permanent” replacement. Timber doors and windows will last 60 years or longer if it is sealed correctly, maintained well and not broken or abused. Usually, if you are 25 years old or older, you can count on any timber door or window being there the rest of your life.
Superior Aesthetics and Design Flexibility
In every conceivable scenario, timber looks better than aluminium. Timber can be painted, stained or just coated with a clear finish to let the beauty of the natural grain and colour show through. Timber is beautiful while aluminium is drab and plain. How many doors or windows have you ever looked at and said, “That aluminium is beautiful?” We know: the answer is “none.”
Now think of all the beautiful timber doors and windows you have seen. From solid timber entry doors with a nice, rich, dark mahogany stain to patio doors or windows made of merbau with a clear finish that lets the colour and grain show fully. And there are plenty of shades in between.
Timber also provides a design flexibility that aluminium doesn’t. With aluminium, you are stuck with a drab, thin frame and/or sash. With timber, you have what seems like endless possibilities, limited only by your imagination and taste.
Timber is environmentally friendly. We explained earlier how we source our timber. When timber is grown sustainably, it stores carbon. Its net carbon footprint is less than zero. The carbon footprint is the most reliable way to measure how much a material or process contributes to global warming. The more carbon wasted, the more it damages the environment.
Aluminium has a horrendous carbon footprint. Manufacturing not only uses a lot of heat and chemicals, putting carbon into the environment, it also creates toxic chemical by-products. None of this happens with timber.
