Why Timber is Our Favourite Material for Custom Built Doors and Windows

At Fremantle Door & Window Company, we make all of our custom built doors and windows out of timber and special weatherproof glass that is made especially for us. We are proud of that fact; it’s one of the first things we want people to know about our work and our finished products.

But this does raise a question: “Why do we like timber so much as a building material?” Here’s why.

Timber Helps the Environment and Fight Global Warming

Timber is made of carbon. When trees “breathe,” they turn the carbon in CO2 into timber fibres and “exhale” the oxygen back into the environment. This is known as “storing carbon.” Global warming is caused by “greenhouse gases” which are trapping the heat we produce in the atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases contain carbon. Consequently, the impact on global warming of any process is called the “carbon footprint.” While carbon has a negative carbon footprint, aluminium has a large carbon footprint because of the manufacturing process. In addition, this manufacturing process creates toxic waste, some of which ends up in the air and in the ground.

Timber Saves You Money

Timber is a natural insulator. When it is used with our special weatherproof glass, a timber door or window helps keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Not only is the timber a natural insulator, but timber makes a more “snug” fit with the jamb or frame. This means you don’t have any “cracks” for air to move in or out. It can keep insects out, too.

This saves you money on heating and cooling. It also helps the environment because your heater or air conditioner also has a carbon footprint and doesn’t have to run as long with custom built timber doors and windows.

Long Service Life

You may notice a lot of older homes that are made of timber. This is no accident. Timber lasts a long time if it is protected by keeping it sealed with paint or stain and keeping it protected from termites if necessary. Many hardwoods offer natural protection from termites.

Timber can provide a service life that is twice as long as PVC or aluminium doors. Timber has a life expectancy of 60 years or more. That is statistically longer than you will own your home.

The Timber Aesthetic

Timber is the best-looking material you will ever use to frame your doors or windows. For an entry door, solid timber with a dark but natural stain has a prosperous look to it. If your doors or windows are made of glass with timber frames, the timber helps integrate your home with nature. This is even more prevalent for bifold doors or sliding doors going to your backyard or patio. Bifold doors are the best way to make an alfresco living area, deck or patio become part of your living space. From the inside and the outside, timber integrates your home into nature and nature into your home.

Better Appearance = More Value

Custom built doors and windows give your home a better appearance. They are the least expensive way to modernise or update a home. They are also the least intrusive option, especially if you want to open up your indoor floor plan.

When your home looks better, it commands a higher price on the market. It also sells faster than ugly homes. If you replaced your aluminium doors and windows that came with the home by installing custom built timber doors and windows, your home’s value would rise by more than you spend. But if you do the same and then live in the home for ten or twenty years, your home value will rise by a lot more than what you spend now.
