Servery Windows and Alfresco Dining

A lot of people don’t know what servery windows are but many of you see them every day. If you go to a drive-thru for fast food or coffee, you are usually receiving your merchandise through a small servery window. It might not look all that great but it is certainly effective for getting your morning cuppa or a quick lunch when you’re in a hurry.

What are servery windows?

Servery windows are windows that have an extra wide sill and open to an outdoor space for the purpose of passing food, beverages, dishes and utensils in and out the window. There are a couple of great ways to have an alfresco dining area in your home. The first is to create an alfresco or outdoor kitchen.

Servery Windows and Alfresco Dining

The alfresco kitchen/dining area is usually located just outside your living room or family room. A bifold door or a sliding door opens onto an alfresco dining area with large kitchen appliances such as a pizza oven, a BBQ or an outdoor stove. Alfresco living areas are much less expensive to build than an extension or addition to your home and they add living space without increasing your heating and cooling costs.

But there is a second, even less expensive way to have convenient alfresco dining for multiple guests that doesn’t require an alfresco kitchen. You simply locate your alfresco dining area outside your kitchen and build servery windows. This can be a low deck or it can be a slab of concrete. It can even be a lawn with pavers and chairs.

You can build a pergola over your dining area if you like. The advantage to using your kitchen and passing your food through a servery window is that you have your entire kitchen at your disposal.
