One of the greatest ways to maximise space in your home is to use an open floor plan, which is now called “zone living.” We have built and installed custom timber bifold doors and sliding doors to help numerous people in the Perth area get the most out of an open floor plan.
The first open floor plans were used for businesses in the 1950’s, and would catch on for residential use in the 1960’s. Original open floor plans were great for maximising space. Unfortunately, this often came at the expense of privacy.
Fast forward to 2015, where open floor plans are experiencing a renaissance of increased popularity. As our homes and property blocks keep getting smaller and smaller, it is becoming increasingly important to maximise the floor area that we have in our homes.
Experience and design advances have made it easier for homeowners to now get the best of both worlds: the added space of an open floor plan and the privacy that would exist if the home was divided into more rooms.
The Best of Both Worlds
With zone living, your kitchen is still the hub for cooking and your living room the hub for socialising. But how do you restore a sense of privacy without putting in walls? The answer is to use bifold doors or sliding doors between “rooms.” We like bifold doors for this purpose a little bit better because they are so versatile.
You can use wide banks of either kind of door to create a partition that still lets light through. Double glazed glass, when combined with timber, is a great sound insulator to help provide privacy when doors are closed. But when you want to go back to the full open plan, all you have to do is open the bifold doors and turn the two zones back into one large zone.
