How to Avoid Losing Heat Through Windows in the Winter

Our custom built windows are built to help your Perth area home save on heating and cooling. Timber is a natural insulator against both heat and cold. We use locally-sourced, high quality glass. We build everything to order so that it fits perfectly and doesn’t let heat or cold in or out unless you have opened it for ventilation.

However, if you are not careful and don’t take a few precautions, you can lose up to ten times as much heat through a window pane as you would through a solid timber door or an insulated wall.

Avoid Losing Heat Through Windows in the Winter

So, how does this happen? The culprit is unprotected glass. In addition, low quality glass, low quality framing or ill-fitting framing can allow heat to escape from your home in the winter, causing discomfort and increasing your heating bills.

To save money on your heating bills in the winter, you just have to pay attention to a few small details, which may have a large effect on your bills. Here are they.

Workmanship and Materials

Your windows should be like we make them at the Fremantle Door & Window Company. The frames should be made of timber. The windowpanes should be of high quality glass. In addition, the windows should be fitted perfectly to the frames and the frames perfectly to the walls so that no air passes through.

Curtains

Your curtains can play a huge role. Ill-fitting curtains that don’t have solid barriers called “pelmets” are going to help your home lose heat. Warm air from above goes over the curtains and hits the windowpanes, which chill the air, passing heat through to the outside.

The way to fix this is to make sure the fit is snug on the sides and to put a snug-fitting pelmet on the top. This will trap the heat inside of your home where it belongs and localise the cold behind the curtains.
