Custom built doors and windows can transform your home from an ordinary “spec home” into a paragon of modern design that will be the envy of your neighbourhood. Think about it. Walls are walls. What is it that really makes your home design? While the placing of the walls and the “fit and finish” of chandeliers and other fixtures can have a great effect on your home’s appearance, it’s the doors and windows that determine your home’s basic design.
Why Custom Built Doors and Windows Make a Difference
If your home was built as part of a subdivision or was built “off the plan” without the help of an architect, it is probably ordinary. It should be a solid home, but builders build their homes off of basic designs and they all share a lot of common characteristics.
First of all, the doors and windows will be built as inexpensively as possible. This usually means aluminium frames and cheap glass for the windows and any sliding doors you may have. Your front entry door and any entry doors on the inside of your home will be laminated wood that is hollow on the inside.
In addition, the doors and the windows will be of common, ordinary designs. There will be nothing to distinguish them from everyone else’s doors and windows. If you love being part of a group and not standing out, that’s great. But what if you expect more from your home than conformity and no unique or redeeming features?
Fremantle Door and Window to the Rescue
That’s where we come in. At Fremantle Door and Window, we can help you come up with your own unique measurements and designs. We offer a variety of custom built doors and windows that can give you any “look” you want for your home. Here is a partial list of what we make: bifold doors, sliding doors, pivot doors, pool house doors, French doors, servery windows, louvre windows, casement windows, awning windows, bifold windows and sliding windows.
Look at the ordinary doors and windows in your home right now. Do they add anything to your decor? What do they say about you and about your home? Now think about what custom built doors and windows could do for your home.
Some Design Options for Custom Built Doors and Windows
One of our favourite interior options is to knock out the walls of the common areas such as your kitchen, dining room, living room and family room and use bifold doors to turn them into a modified open floor plan. If you have a two storey home with the bedrooms upstairs, the entire bottom floor can be turned into an ultra-modern open floor home.
Bifold doors can be used to separate rooms when closed. But when they are open, they sit compactly against your outer walls, leaving the entire area open. This adds a lot to your living space. Even when closed, they allow a lot of light into your home, providing an illusion of even more extra living space.
One of our favourite exterior options is to use bifold doors leading onto a patio, turning it into an alfresco living area. Bifold doors create the largest opening because they fold on hinges off to the side. If your bifold door is 3m wide, you are going to get at least a 2.8m opening. The next best bet is a sliding door, but if it is 3m wide, your opening will be 1.5m wide.
Bifold doors and sliding doors create more space compared to conventional swinging doors because no clearance is needed for the “wake” of the door when it opens.
