Custom Built Doors: Why Sustainable Timber is So Important

Our custom built doors and windows are built with sustainable, ethically-sourced timber. This is important to us because we are determined to leave this world better than we found it. And one of the best ways to do that is to lower our “carbon footprint” in every way possible.

What is the Carbon Footprint and Why is it So Important?

The carbon footprint is the most reliable measurement of how a person or a process affects climate change. Climate change is caused by the emission of “greenhouse gases” into the environment. These are all carbon-based, making our “carbon footprint” the most reliable measurement of how we are affecting the environment.

How Sustainable Timber Helps the Environment

Some timber is unethically-sourced in a way that is not sustainable. The greatest example of that is the cutting down of hectares and hectares of the rainforest in South America and Africa. But what does it mean to harvest a tree in a sustainable manner?

It starts with carbon. When people breathe, we keep the oxygen in the air and exhale the carbon. Trees are the opposite of us as it pertains to carbon and oxygen. They keep the carbon in the air and “exhale” oxygen. While our atmosphere is abundant, it is also finite. Trees are necessary to keep the right level of oxygen in our environment so that we have air to breathe.

As a tree grows, it stores carbon in the form of timber. Timber actually has a “negative” carbon footprint as it takes carbon from the environment and stores it. When a tree is simply chopped down and not replaced, it stops that tree from taking more carbon and producing more oxygen.

When a tree is ethically harvested, it is harvested at its ideal age and replanted with another tree that continues its work. It not only has a negative carbon footprint, but also adds oxygen back to our environment.
