At the Fremantle Door & Window Company, we provide custom built, internal and external doors and windows in the Perth area. We build our doors and windows out of 100% ethically sourced timber. Timber plays a large role in environmental design. Here’s how.
Carbon Footprint
Timber is made out of mostly carbon. Trees “inhale” CO2 and exhale the oxygen, storing the carbon as fibre. This creates a negative “carbon footprint” and helps lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the environment.
Young trees grow fast. When they reach a point in their growth curve where they aren’t turning as much CO2 into carbon, they can be cut down and used for timber while a new tree is planted in its place. This new tree absorbs carbon and releases oxygen at a faster rate than the one that was just torn down.
Energy Efficiency
This means using the lowest amount of energy possible to heat and cool your home. Timber is a great insulator on its own. When combined with insulating products, timber is incredibly efficient at saving energy.
Life Cycle Assessment
A life cycle assessment measures the environmental impact of a product over its entire life cycle. Timber has one of the lowest total environmental impacts of any material used for building.
Recycling
While timber is often burned or otherwise used as wasted, it is often reused, recycled and/or repurposed. Timber is a versatile material. Timber from a building or a component such as a door that is being torn down can often be used for other purposes and projects. Timber products often get a second, third and even a fourth life by the time they are reused or repurposed.
